The iconic Birkin bag - originally named after Jane Birkin - was first imagined in 1981 when the CEO of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas, was seated next to Ms Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. Ms Birkin had just placed her straw travelling bag in the overhead compartment; the contents of which soon fell out to the ground. She explained to Dumas that it had proven difficult to find a leather travel bag which she liked. After discussing this at length together, it was on that very flight that idea of the Birkin bag was initially brought to life.
