Unpacking the Twee Fashion Trend
Twee was a fashion trend, peaking in the 2010s. Meaning dainty, delicate, cute or quaint, this was a trend that was an alternative to the ‘indie sleaze’ aesthetic that was also popular at the time. Twee fashion was more feminine, quirky and artsy. Zooey Deschanel became the unofficial Twee icon, and indie music and Wes Anderson films were the ultimate vibe.
With trends now circling back round at unprecedented speeds, the Twee trend is already back on runways with Dior and Miu Miu featuring Twee staples in their spring 2022 shows. The aesthetic of the 50s and the mod shapes of the 60s are the inspiration for this style and miniskirts, cardigans, peter pan collars and Mary Janes are the items to look for to achieve a Twee look.
With millennials and Gen Z being more inclined to dismiss fast fashion and buy pre-loved, second hand or thrifted items, it is no wonder that this aesthetic is making a comeback. Nostalgic and vintage items are the ideal pieces to create a twee wardrobe. It’s affordable look with options for layering, altering and creating a unique personal style.
