Layering 101
Layering is an art that truly elevates your style. It's all about combining different textures, lengths, and colours to create a stylish and practical look. Layering might seem straightforward, but creating a cohesive and comfortable outfit can be quite challenging! Read below for how to layer your looks.
Base Layers First
Choose a lightweight, breathable piece that sits comfortably against the skin. Think a fitted turtleneck, a classic tee, or a thin bodysuit. Neutrals or subtle patterns work best here since they set the foundation without overpowering the look.
Mid Layer Next
This layer provides insulation and adds texture or visual interest. Opt for sweaters, button-down shirts, or cardigans. Experiment with fabrics like knits, denim, or even silk shirts to add dimension. Let the collar or cuffs of the base layer peek out for contrast
Outer Layer to Finish
Your shield against the elements, so think structured blazers, trench coats, bomber jackets, or longline coats. Play with lengths and silhouettes. For example, pair a cropped jacket with a longer middle layer for a dynamic outfit.
Mixing Textures, Patterns, Colour and Proportions
Pair contrasting materials, like leather with knits or denim with satin for a more interesting look. Mix patterns subtly by sticking to one dominant print and pairing it with a simpler piece. When experimenting with colour you can incorporate one bold piece or accessory to liven up the outfit without overwhelming it. Alternitvley, stick to monochromatic tones for a sleek, cohesive look. For a rule of thumb with proportion: If one layer is oversized (like an oversized coat), keep the other layers more fitted to avoid overwhelming your frame. Each layer should be slightly longer or shorter than the one beneath it to avoid a blocky look - try leting the hem of a shirt or sweater peek out beneath your jacket.
