The Met Gala was established in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a fundraiser for the newly founded Costume Institute. It was one of many annual charitable events that attracted some of the Upper East Side’s most esteemed socialites. The event was originally a midnight dinner with entry costing a mere $50 compared with the astounding $75,000 per ticket today. The event has become renowned for being the centre stage of red carpet fashion attracting the most innovative outfits on a star-studded guest list.

This year's theme was “Garden of Time” and was co-hosted by Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth and Zendaya. The theme explored notions of rebirth and renewal using nature as a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion. The exhibit itself displays archival pieces, now too fragile to be worn, brought to life again through technology. The Met Gala can always be counted on for outlandish looks and stunning pieces and this year didn’t disappoint, we’re looking at three of the most iconic looks to grace the Met steps this year.

Taylor Russell

Taylor Russel made her debut at the Met Gala this year, her presence was highly anticipated and she certainly made a statement. This gorgeous piece created by Loewe made our jaws hit the floor, perfectly on theme and absolutely stunning! The high-neck wooden-look bodice perfectly resembled the nature inspired theme in an abstract way. Loewe stated their aim was to play with the senses and blur the lines between what was natural and unnatural hence they used synthetic materials to create a piece that resembled natural wood. The bodice was paired with a silk skirt with a high-thigh split and draped waist - It complimented the structure of the bodice with lots of movement. This look perfectly fit the theme of “Garden of Time” and Taylor Russel… We’re obsessed!

Alton Mason

The men at the Met weren’t afraid to turn a look and Alton Mason was no exception to that rule, in fact he was one of our best dressed men of the night. Alton Mason was one of 9 people to be dressed in Thom Browne at the Met this year alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names including GiGi Hadid and Queen Latifah. Mason sported a monochromatic look consisting of an unbuttoned plaid suit made from tweed, paired with some very chunky black and white patent heeled boots and an oversized tailcoat that acted as a train. Although the look could have made more reference to nature in-order to be on theme overall we loved the vibe of the look and it was really well executed on the night.

Tyla

Finally another star making their Met Gala debut, Tyla in Balmain. After her song going viral on TikTok earlier this year Tyla has made a very quick rise to stardom so people were eager to see what look she would bring to the event. She was by far one of our favourite looks of the night opting for a different take on the idea of nature - where most people opted for flowers or greenery, Tyla went down the dessert route. She sported an extremely structured dress, moulded perfectly to her body, and the material resembled sand, as though she had been buried in it. The look has since gone viral but not for the reasons you may think… The dress was so tight that she was unable to walk in it so she had to designate one of her security team to carry her up the stairs! Not only was it an abstract yet fitting take on this year's theme, but it was perfectly tailored to Tyla making it one of the most iconic pieces to grace the met steps this year (even if she couldn’t walk up them by herself).
